AI and the Judicial Experts: Opportunities and Challenges for the Justice System (AIEx)

AI and the Judicial Experts: Opportunities and Challenges for the Justice System (AIEx) is a strategic program hosted by Jagiellonian University, Poland, and led by Professors Inês Fernandes Godinho (CEAD Francisco Suárez and Lusófona University) and Mateusz Stępień (Jagiellonian University, Kraków). The program focuses on exploring the impact of the AI revolution on judicial experts across Europe, with a particular emphasis on their roles in criminal proceedings.
AIEx recognizes that the rapid development of AI represents one of the most significant challenges facing justice systems worldwide. Despite its transformative potential, there remains a notable gap in research addressing judicial experts' attitudes and perceptions about AI and a lack of empirical analysis on how AI is reshaping their professional responsibilities.
Objectives of the Project
The central aim is to identify the key challenges and issues related to the use of AI tools in the work of judicial experts, incorporating their perspectives and assessing systemic implications within the framework of a well-functioning judiciary.
Key Areas of Focus
The project explores topics such as:
- Judicial experts' perspectives on AI: benefits and challenges in their work.
- The impact of AI tools: procedural guarantees, access to justice, ethical concerns, and public perceptions.
- Legal and regulatory frameworks: challenges and recommendations for judicial experts using AI.
- Empirical studies: real-world examples of successful or problematic uses of AI by judicial experts.
- Emerging case law: cases involving judicial experts’ use of AI tools.
- Speculative analyses: potential innovations or disruptions caused by AI in judicial expertise.
- Systemic changes: evolving roles of judicial experts in AI-influenced proceedings.
Contributions and Participation
The project invites researchers, judicial experts, and legal practitioners to participate by joining online meetings and contributing to a forthcoming book to be published by a prestigious international publisher (e.g., OUP, CUP, Springer, Routledge). The goal is to produce a comprehensive and detailed analysis of the nuanced relationship between AI and judicial experts, focusing on practical solutions and actionable insights.
