Open Lecture – The Primacy of European Union Law

14th of april 2026

CEAD is promoting the Open Lecture – The Primacy of European Union Law, which will take place on April 14 at 3:30 p.m. in Room C-1.3 of the Faculty of Law and Political Science.

The session will feature Professor Bárbara Barreiros, a lecturer at the Faculty of Law and Political Science of Universidade Lusófona – University Centre of Porto and an Associate Researcher at CEAD Francisco Suárez. She will explore the foundations and implications of the principle of the primacy of EU law, established by the Court of Justice of the European Union since the landmark Costa/ENEL judgment of 15 July 1964.

This open lecture, held within the framework of the European Law course (BA in European Studies, Lusophone Studies and International Relations) and the Legal and Political System of the European Union course (BA in Political Science and Electoral Studies), will discuss how this principle ensures the uniformity and effectiveness of European Union law over the national legislation of the Member States.
