Researcher at CEAD Presents Paper on Quantum Computing and Medical Liability

Professor Rui Cascão, Researcher at Centre for Advanced Studies in Law Francisco Suárez, at Universidade Lusófona, participated in the 30th Annual World Congress for Medical Law, organised by the World Association for Medical Law (WAML) and the University of Antwerp. The congress took place in Antwerp, Belgium, from 5 to 7 August 2026, under the theme “Expanding Boundaries in Health Law: Access, Innovation and Interdisciplinarity”.

As part of the congress, the researcher presented the paper “Towards a Quantum Leap for Medical Liability in Europe” in the “Medical Liability II” session, which addressed the legal challenges posed by quantum computing to European medical liability regimes. The paper proposes possible avenues for reforming existing liability frameworks in light of the indeterministic nature of this emerging technology.

In addition to his presentation, Professor Rui Cascão actively participated in the WAML General Assembly and established contacts with researchers from several European universities, paving the way for future scientific collaborations. The paper has been published in the congress Book of Abstracts, and a scientific article based on this research is expected to be submitted to the international journal Medicine and Law.
