Renvoi (to the law of the forum or to a foreign law) and characterization (or qualification) are complex subjects with their own logic and terminology, yet they are essential for determining the law applicable to an international private legal relationship. The mission of this manual is to deconstruct these topics so that the Portuguese academia—and consequently, practical legal life—develops a deeper interest in private international law.
The manual provides a theoretical exposition of the concepts, principles, and doctrines fundamental to understanding renvoi, characterization, and private international law in general. It also includes a collection of practical cases that, throughout the author's teaching experience, have served to support classroom explanations and student assessments.
