Rui Albuquerque has a law degree (1986), a master's degree (1997) and a PhD (2007) in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Minho and has been teaching in higher education since 1987. He has also worked in university and academic management in Portugal and Brazil. He is currently deputy director of the Faculty of Law and Political Science at the Lusófona University of Porto and director of the university publication "1820-Revista de Ciência Política". He regularly publishes scientific papers and opinion articles.
