Open Lecture - The Right to a Good Name and Reputation and Freedom of Expression: The Clash

11th of november 2025

CEAD Francisco Suárez is pleased to announce the Open Lecture “The Right to a Good Name and Reputation and Freedom of Expression: The Clash”, which will take place on November 11, 2025, at 5:00 PM, in the José Araújo Auditorium.

At a time when the boundaries between freedom of expression and the protection of honor and reputation are becoming increasingly blurred, this session aims to foster a critical and interdisciplinary reflection on the coexistence — and conflict — between two fundamental rights enshrined in both national and international legal frameworks.

The Open Lecture will feature a panel of guest speakers with recognized expertise in the fields of Law and Justice:

  • João Bernardo – Retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Justice

  • Francisco Teixeira da Mota – Lawyer

  • Vanessa Mamedes – Lecturer and PhD Candidate in Law at Universidade Lusófona (Lisbon) and ISMAT | Researcher at CEAD Francisco Suárez

The session will be organized and moderated by:

  • André Inácio, Graça Canto Moniz, and Lurdes Vargas – Law Professors at Universidade Lusófona (Lisbon) and Researchers at CEAD Francisco Suárez

This event is free of charge and open to students, faculty, legal professionals, and all those interested in understanding the challenges of balancing freedom of expression with the protection of reputation in a democratic society.
