1st International Conference on Family, Law and Social Change – Contemporary Challenges – Comparative and International Law

14th may 2026

CEAD Francisco Suárez is pleased to announce the 1st International Conference on Family, Law and Social Change – Contemporary Challenges – Comparative and International Law, which will take place on May 14, 2026, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon (FDUL).

This event is co-organized by the Faculty of Law of Universidade Lusófona and IURIS – Interdisciplinary Research Institute, bringing together academics, researchers, and legal practitioners for an in-depth reflection on the contemporary dynamics of Family Law in a context shaped by rapid social, technological, and legal transformations.

The event proposes an in-depth reflection on the contemporary challenges of Family Law, bringing together experts to discuss the social, scientific, and legal transformations that have been reshaping how the family is conceived and regulated by law. Throughout three thematic panels, the conference will address new family configurations, the impact of reproductive technologies on family formation, and the legal challenges associated with transnational family contexts.

Through an interdisciplinary and comparative approach, participants will explore topics such as the historical evolution of the family, the recognition of non-traditional family models, medically assisted reproduction, surrogacy, as well as issues related to the protection of children in situations of international family conflict, including parental alienation and international child abduction.

Overall, the conference aims to promote academic and legal debate on the adaptation of Family Law to new social, technological, and global realities, contributing to a broader understanding of current challenges and possible responses within contemporary law.

The conference thus represents a unique opportunity for knowledge sharing and for fostering critical perspectives on one of the areas of law most sensitive to the transformations of contemporary society.
