Mélanie Tiago
Mélanie M. Tiago holds a PhD in Criminology from the School of Criminal Sciences at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, a Master’s in Criminology and Security from the same university, and a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology from the Faculty of Law at the University of Porto. She is a Professor of Criminology and Researcher at Lusófona University in Lisbon.
In parallel, she collaborates with the ESEHA association in the collection and analysis of statistical data on the functioning of the justice system in Switzerland, as well as in the development and creation of questionnaires and databases. She is also part of The Portuguese Prison Photo Project, a project aimed at showcasing Portuguese prisons through photography, combining photographic exhibitions with scientific conferences on the subject.
Between 2021 and 2023, she collaborated with the International Institute for the Rights of the Child in creating a database as part of a project focused on children in contact with the criminal justice system. Having worked for seven years on the collection, processing, and analysis of statistical data for the Annual Penal Statistics of the Council of Europe (SPACE), she has a particular interest in penitentiary issues.
