José Manuel Aroso Linhares

JOSÉ MANUEL AROSO LINHARES has devoted his entire academic career to the arenas of Philosophy of Law, Legal Theory and Juridical Methodology: recently retired (March 2026) as Full Professor of the Faculty of Law, University of Coimbra (Portugal), he continues teaching in the same areas at the Lusófona University (an institution with which he has collaborated since 2006) and is also an integrated researcher at UCILeR (The University of Coimbra Institute for Legal Research) and an associate researcher at CEAD (Centro de Estudos Avançados em Direito Francisco Suárez). He has been the President of the Coordinating Board of UCILeR between 2017 and 2026, as well as the Vice-President of the Portuguese Section of the IVR (Associação Portuguesa de Teoria do Direito, Filosofia do Direito e Filosofia Social) between 2009 and 2025. His current research interests include the theory of evidence, narrative rationality, intercultural dialogue, judge-made law, inclusive positivism, law and literature, law and performance, law and image. His specific metadogmatic research agenda (exploring a jurisprudentialist approach) considers the aspirational content of Law (and its implications in the different dogmatic fields, but also in concrete adjudication),whilst acknowledging that the possibilities and demands to be taken in account, involving a permanent re-writing of memory, concern a “certain” Law (the one we may treat as a component of European identity) and this one seriously taken as a tradition, a practical project and a form of life. Throughout his career he gave numerous lectures (and participated in international scientific meetings) in Portugal, Brazil, Timor, Angola, Germany, Austria, Spain, France, Hungary, Italy, Poland, China, USA, Sweden, Switzerland, Romania, United Kingdom, Belgium and Turkey. He has publications in several languages (Portuguese, English, German, Castilian, French and Polish).
