José Gonçalves Machado holds a Ph.D. in Law and is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law, Universidade Lusófona de Lisboa, as well as a practicing lawyer. He earned his doctorate in Private Law from the University of Minho with the thesis titled "Civil Liability of Managers for Breach of the Duty to Promote Negotiation within the Framework of Pre-Insolvency Business Recovery Instruments." At the same institution, he also completed a Master's degree in Contract and Business Law with a dissertation titled "The Duty to Renegotiate in the Pre-Insolvency Context."
He completed a Postgraduate program in Banking Law at the Private Law Research Center, Faculty of Law, University of Lisbon, and obtained his Law degree from the Portuguese Catholic University. He is the author of several publications and an active researcher in Private Law.
